The Woman Whose Daughter Was Possessed
(A Comparison)1

Back

Mark 7Matthew 15
24 From that place he went off to the district of Tyre.
He entered a house and wanted no one to know about it,
but he could not escape notice.
21 Then Jesus went from that place and withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon.
25 Soon a woman whose daughter had an unclean spirit heard about him.
She came and fell at his feet.
26 The woman was a Greek,
a Syrophoenician by birth,
and she begged him to drive the demon out of her daughter.
22 And behold,
a Canaanite woman of that district came and called out,
"Have pity on me,
Lord, Son of David!
My daughter is tormented by a demon."
23 But he did not say a word in answer to her.
His disciples came and asked him,
"Send her away,
for she keeps calling out after us."
24 He said in reply,
"I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel."
25 But the woman came and did him homage, saying,
"Lord, help me."
27 He said to her,
"Let the children be fed first.
For it is not right to take the food of the children and throw it to the dogs."
26 He said in reply,
"It is not right to take the food of the children
and throw it to the dogs."
28. She replied and said to him,
"Lord, even the dogs under the table eat the children's scraps."
27 She said,
"Please, Lord, for even the dogs eat the scraps that fall from the table of their masters."
29 Then he said to her,
"For saying this, you may go.
The demon has gone out of your daughter."
28 Then Jesus said to her in reply,
"O woman, great is your faith!
Let it be done for you as you wish."
30 When the woman went home,
she found the child lying in bed and the demon gone.
And her daughter was healed from that hour.

1. The story of the woman from the regions of Tyre and Sidon who came to Jesus to ask him to exorcise a demon besetting her daughter is found in Mark and Matthew but not in Luke.
